* From correspondents in Montcoal, West Virginia * From: AP * April 06, 2010 4:34PM MASSEY Energy says 25 workers have been killed in a West Virginia coal mine explosion, in the worst US mine disaster since 1984.
The explosion on Monday (local time) rocked the remote coal mine with a history of safety problems. Rescuers had been trying to get to at least 10 miners they thought were trapped. The rescue was halted, even though officials said four men were still unaccounted for today. The blast happened at the Upper Big Branch mine run by Performance Coal Company, a subsidiary of Massey Energy, in the town of Montcoal, about 50 kilometres south of Charleston. It is the worst US mine disaster since 1984, when 27 people were killed by a fire at Emery Mining Corp's mine in Orangeville, Utah.
