Albuquerque Express Saturday 11th July, 2009 A powerful earthquake that flattened thousands of homes in the southwestern part of China has caused a rush of emergency workers to enter the worst-hit areas.
Residents have been devastated by the destruction caused by Thursday's magnitude 6.0 earthquake in China's Yunnan province. Chinese officials have called for relief efforts to be steeped up and for supplies to be sent to the region as quickly as possible. Already, thousands of people have taken refuge inside tents. Groups of soldiers have been shovelling through rubble in an effort to find survivors in the collapsed houses. So many homes have collapsed that it has been difficult for officials to keep tally. The official Xinhua news agency says the quake destroyed more than 18,000 homes and damaged 75,000. The death toll has not yet been assessed but over 250,000 people have been left homeless.
