The Associated Press Saturday, September 27, 2008; 12:24 AM HANOI, Vietnam -- Floods triggered by Typhoon Hagupit have killed at least 25 people in northern Vietnam and the death toll could increase as information from isolated villages trickles in, disaster officials said Saturday.
In the worst-hit province of Son La, floodwaters swept at least ten people away and another five were reported missing, said disaster official Nguyen Van Loan. Two people were crushed to death when houses destroyed by the rushing waters collapsed onto them, Loan said. Loan said the death toll in the province could grow when access and communications are restored to villages isolated by the storms and floods. Rescue workers including soldiers and police were mobilized to search for the missing, said Son La provincial official Cam Pan. Floods killed at least ten people in Lang Son province, said disaster official Bui Thanh. In the neighboring province of Bac Giang another five died and one was missing, disaster official Quach Minh Tuyen said. Authorities rushed food and medicine to people in the affected areas. Rain eased in the affected provinces Saturday and water levels on rivers began receding. Typhoon Hagupit swept into southern China's Guangdong province Wednesday, killing 10 people and forcing the evacuation of more than 28,000 before weakening into a tropical storm, China's official Xinhua News Agency reported. The storm slammed into northern Vietnam on Thursday, unleashing heavy rains.
