* Wednesday August 20 2008 11:08 BST The US and Poland have signed a deal to place an American missile defence base in Poland, further straining Russia's ties with the west following the conflict in Georgia.
Condoleezza Rice, the US secretary of state, and the Polish foreign minister, Radek Sikorski, completed the formal signing today after 18 months of negotiations. The deal has angered Russia, which has said Poland is making itself a target vulnerable to attack, possibly a nuclear one. Today's formal signing comes six days after Poland and the US struck the deal to place 10 American interceptor missiles 115 miles from Russia's western frontier.
