Israel to strike Hamas activists after group fired rockets at Israeli town

JERUSALEM Israeli defense officials say the army will strike activists of the ruling Hamas group after its militants took part in rocket attacks on Israel in the past week.

Islamic Jihad and other militant groups in Gaza often fire homemade rockets at Israeli towns and cities. But the militant Islamic Hamas, which governs the Palestinian Authority, has largely refrained from violence since a cease-fire was reached in February 2005.

Israel says a change in Hamas' policy was seen last week and Tuesday when Hamas-made rockets were fired at Israeli towns.

In retaliation, Israel will strike at Hamas activists involved in the barrages, but will refrain from targeting the group's leaders because they are not issuing orders to fire rockets.

Israeli defense officials assess that Hamas' main target is the home of Israel's defense minister.
