TOKYO, December 31 (Itar-Tass) -- A series of minor earthquakes were registered in Japan on Sunday, the Japan Meteorological Agency said.

The first earthquake measuring 5.1 points on the open-ended Richter scale jolted Japan’s northernmost island of Hokkaido at 07:38 local time, the agency said.

The quake epicenter was located not far from the city of Nemuro, a Japanese port nearest to the South Kuriles.

Another quake with a magnitude of 4.9 shook Chiba prefecture, just outside Tokyo, and Shizuoka prefecture located some 200 kilometers southwest off the capital.

Six hours before, a series of earthquakes with a magnitude up to 4.7 was registered near the Izu Islands stretching southward from Tokyo.

There were no immediate reports about tsunami threat, damage or casualties.
