The Israeli prime minister riled senior commanders by advancing the candidacy of his military secretary, Maj Gen Yihanan Locker, for the post after the present commander signalled his desire to retire.

TEHRAN | Thu Jan 19, 2012 1:32pm EST (Reuters) - About 100 people were injured when an earthquake measuring 5.5 on the Richter scale hit northeastern Iran on Thursday, state television reported. The epicenter of the quake, which struck at 4:05 p.m., was 10 km (6 miles) outside the city of Neyshabur, some 70 km from the holy city of Mashhad, the official IRNA news agency said.

By Dan Vergano, USA TODAY NASA satellites detected the Sun unleashing a massive blast at Earth on Thursday. The Coronal Mass Ejection (CME), a solar blast of highly-energetic particles, is expected to arrive at Earth on Saturday, likely sparking bright Northern Lights and potentially disrupting some communications. A "Long Duration M3.2 Class Solar Flare" started at 8:42 a.m. ET, on Thursday, according to the space agency and released the blast now traveling towards Earth at 630 miles per second.
